That being said, on to this week's topic: Developing Your Own ICT Skills and Technology!
One big thing I have learned about myself these past few weeks is that I can do anything! Another thing that I already knew about myself is that I need to work on my time management. This time, adding parenting to the mix. One thing I always find time for is Instagram. I've followed the hashtags #teacherlibrarian and #teacherlibrariansofinstagram and have perused a plethora of resources! Through these hashtags, I have learned that October is Cyber Safety Month and found the blog The Book Bug: Tales of a School Library Media Specialist.

I find using google to search for blogs is a big task. There is so much to search through, link by link, to find out if it will be a useful or up-to-date source. Social media is such an amazing visual tool to narrow down searches and find ideas. Having these online social networks are such a blessing, but having in-person networks are just as important.
The Chilliwack Teacher's Association has so many options for meeting new teachers. They have a mentorship program, schedule walks on local trails, and even schedule movie nights. On October 29, the CTA is hosting a "social" specifcally for TTOC and Early Career Teachers. I have found it difficult in previous districts to meet and make connections with fellow TTOCs, as we are always at different schools and might not get the chance to see each other again for months at a time. I am excited to go to my first social even this year and hopefully see some more friendly faces around my district.

Natalee,
ReplyDeleteI find it very comforting reading your blog as I too am a TTOC. My school district offers a TTOC coffee connections meeting once a month, which helps a lot with making connections within the school district. This started a couple years ago and I think it has made a huge difference having that support system. I attended the first year and this year my friend beth has taken on the role as TTOC chairperson. I have asked her to keep me in mind if she needs any help with this role as my goal this year is trying to connect myself within the school district community and teacher associations.
I love this idea of a TTOC coffee connecting time! I feel in some ways that TOCs are a secret underground community - I'm always relieved when I come to a school and see another TOC that I know, because it happens so rarely. Going into new school situations every day can be daunting, but it feels easier when you know you're part of a community of TTOCs.
DeleteThat sounds awesome, Kaitlin! Non-teaching friends/family always ask about what it's like being a TTOC and I always say that it's kind of lonely because you're only in for teachers who aren't there. Even if you go in for a teacher on a regular basis, you never get to actually meet them in person! I'm glad to see that more districts and teacher associations are paying attention to this and making some changes :)
DeleteNatalee,
ReplyDeleteI admire your goal of delving in and trying everything out. Is it ironic that just this Friday at our district implementation day we had to chose a goal in a word for this year and I chose "simplify?" Ha! As a TL though we do get to dive into many different classrooms and jump on board many initiatives. I am hoping this year to better define what the heck it is I am doing though so that I can be effective. It is a tough balancing act for certain.
I love that goal! I feel like everything would be less stressful if we all just tried to simplify :)
DeleteWell done reflection on your experiences so far this year and what you are learning about yourself and what you want to keep learning and cultivating. You've identified many interesting communities, opportunities and connections to foster and cultivate as well as resources, hashtags and coffee dates to keep learning from others, developing relationships and finding the right amount of balance. A well done post.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Aaron! I'm looking forward to a little more free-time as of next Tuesday to keep on top of everything! Although I did just a apply for a short-term Teacher Librarian/ K/1 intervention posting, so we'll see what happens!
DeleteI got hung up on your offhand comment that "one thing I always find time for is Instagram"...that's me too! Your comment caused me to reflect on the simple/easy/intuitive ways we can engage in PD on an ongoing basis. You're right, I always have time for Intagram, maybe its time for me to take a step toward including more teaching follows and posts on my Insta feed. Thanks for this!
ReplyDeleteSo glad I'm not the only one! I've signed up for so many social media accounts and followed a few of the fads, but instagram has been a constant for me since it came out! I've always been a very visual person, so the format really works for me. I don't post about work, but I'm thinking that once I'm in the swing of things career-wise that maybe I'll make a separate account for teaching! If any of my students parents are like me, it would be a great communication tool for keeping them up to date on what's going on in the library too.
DeleteGreat post Natalee! I really connected with your insights into using social media to find teacher-librarian ideas versus sifting through the results of a google search. I have found the same thing with the sometimes lacklustre results of google algorithms. I think that Instagram and Twitter are invaluable tools for us to connect and share. Thanks for sharing your resources and thoughts!
